Dear Neighbor,

As our economy presents real challenges, people of all ages and income levels are facing increased hardship.  I do not believe that anyone should have to choose between paying for prescription drugs or keeping their lights on - and they should not have to choose between paying their mortgage or sending their children to college.  On the state level, legislators have a responsibility to draft balanced budgets and protect essential social services, health care, education and economic programs.  As one party controls Springfield, our system of checks and balances has eroded, resulting in a lack of fiscal responsibility and partisan infighting.

While representing you in Springfield for the last 12 years, I have not let politics derail my legislative agenda.  While an unusually large number of bills have been stalled in the General Assembly, I am proud to report that I passed many meaningful pieces of legislation.   I have worked diligently on a plethora of issues, including but not limited to, improvements in education, health care, ethics reform, community safety and the environment.  Some of my most significant accomplishments include drafting legislation that created Illinois' first Abandoned Newborn Safe Haven Law (45 children have been saved to date), acquiring record funding increases for schools and special education and expanding the State prescription drug programs for low-income seniors and the disabled.

As both a Professor and one of only two Health Care Providers in the General Assembly, I believe I bring a unique set of qualifications to the legislature.  I know first-hand how imperative a quality education is to all students and their communities.  As a Physical Therapist, I have seen the extraordinary benefits that come from having access to quality health care.  My degree in business has helped me to play a leading role in many budget negotiations in Springfield and I have a long-standing record of working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to achieve advancements in many areas.

I am requesting your support, as I believe I am the most qualified candidate to represent the 17th district.  My record demonstrates that I have the ability to yield both effective and consistent progress.  It has been an honor serving our community, and I ask that you consider supporting my re-election on November 4th.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Coulson
State Representative, 17th District
